 Dear Watch Member,Hertfordshire, has seen an exponential increase in the number of cyberattacks carried out against businesses. Ranging from Denial of Service (DoS) attacks whereby a company’s network traffic is interrupted rendering services unavailable; theft of customer data later sold on the Darkweb, Ransomware attacks which bring companies to their knees; through to Mandate Fraud, when an organisation is tricked into changing a regular suppliers bank details.Even with Cyber insurance it’s often too late considering the leveraging of fines from the ICO as well as the reputational damage caused when customers jump ship due to the perceived lack of care in which their personal data was stored.Preparing for "Protecting against a Cyberattack" must become common practice – the same way you prepare for a fire with staff training, risk assessing, evac plans. Similarly, as we value physical security with burglar alarms, access systems and CCTV, we must also ‘target harden’ our company in Cyberspace. Your company online contains more sensitive information than in any locked cabinet in an office might, and it’s much easier than ever to access. It is often smaller businesses which struggle to recover from a breach due to the lack of awareness, preparation or funding.Hertfordshire Police offer free online talks via Zoom or Microsoft Teams, or in-person presentations (if enough staff in attendance) to businesses. These include protect advice for yourselves and your business, case studies, and signposting to services such as the Police Cyber Alarm, the Eastern Region’s Cyber Resilience Centre. It is often basic advice which isn’t implemented until after an attack.
